How to Install a Concrete Water Tank: A Picture-Based Glimpse

We realise that some of you might be able to better visualise things when they’re in diagram form. It’s the reason we created this handy infographic, which lays out how to install a concrete water tank, from initial permission checking, right through to seeing your tank in place on your site. It’s a lengthy process, but once everything’s in place you’ll be glad you made that enquiry; a water tank makes economic sense for your business.

We don’t tend to offer a one-size-fits-all approach to water tanks, and they can suit domestic or commercial properties. Used to store water, chemicals, or dangerous goods, they can also be turned into wine cellars. That’s right, you know!

Ideal for people with limited storage space, concrete water tanks can be installed underground, too. Then you can simply lay your driveway over the top. We really do think of everything here.

So, how is a Concrete Water Tank Constructed?

We found this video over on YouTube, which is worth a watch if only to see the cute dogs enjoying a loving embrace at the beginning. The tutorial: ‘How to Make a Concrete Water Tank…Vol.129’ does a pretty good job of explaining the installation process.

This is, however, carried out on a slightly smaller scale to the tanks we install here, but you’ll certainly get the general idea.

Concrete water tanks are rectangular or circular, and they can be incorporated into:

  • House drawings
  • Plans
  • Commercial building submissions.

Designed to be modular and to tightly sit next to one another, concrete fire tanks can be buried underground or installed on a driveway, garage or patio.

The process of construction is a thorough one – but it doesn’t have to mean unnecessary hassle for you and your business. Here’s how it works:

Preparation

Your tank can be constructed above or below ground, and its base needs to be flat – preferably laser-levelled, too. It requires around 150 ml of compacted road base, no fill, and in terms of the foundation on which your tank will be built, it needs to be able to stand some weight.

Choose ground of uniform thickness that’s capable of bearing a pressure of 100 kPa and you’ll be more than ready to get going. You’ll also need to have plenty of room around the tank, for building the scaffolding after laying out the formwork.

Manufacturing

Made from a high strength concrete, our tanks are built to stand the test of time. Our team pours at 50mpa and our HSC at 28 days cures to 72mpa. This mix design means we can gain high strength in hardly any time at all.

Using Australian structural steel, which is welded as per Australian standards, this is a method which ensures an even concrete coverage. Without such grounding, your concrete tank won’t be nearly as efficient.

Manufactured in a seamless steel pulse mould, all our concrete tanks are made in a closed factory away from the elements. This serves to eliminate any micro cracks, and the steel pulse ensures no joins, and therefore no leaks.

All our tanks can be adapted to wine cellars, should you require it, and we can even reduce the height of the tanks, or increase their thickness. It’s all part of our second-to-none service here at Versatile Tanks.

Of course, that great service doesn’t stop once you’ve had a concrete water tank installed; you’ll receive excellent after care from our team, too.

Do I Need a Professional Team?

The answer is yes! Of course, you can have a go at installing a concrete water tank yourself – but it’s a laborious process, and without the right tools and know-how you could end up doing more harm to your land than good.

WikiHow also has some advice on building and maintaining a water tank. However, if you’d like a job doing well, it really is worth calling in the professionals.

Ready for a Concrete Water Tanks?

By now you’ve probably learned all you need to know about concrete water tanks.

But did you know we can install tanks in a host of locations around Australia? Here’s why and where you might need one:

Perth – If you live in Perth, you’ll be happy; it’s officially the sunniest city in the country. But with 131 days per year with not a cloud to be seen, it’s also a place that could suffer problems with water collection. A concrete water tank, then, is a great means of hanging onto that much-needed supply, and ours prove as effective for homes as they are for businesses.

Victoria – Reside in Victoria? It’s Australia’s second smallest state, with a diverse and wide-ranging climate. You’ll experience varying degrees of water depending on where you are in the region, and you’ll find that collecting rainwater via a concrete tank will prove to be a very wise decision. Of the people who chose to have a concrete tank fitted via our team, the majority said they now hardly need to rely on the mains water supply.

New South Wales –  In the south-east of Australia, New South Wales has a temperature climate with significant disparities – one is its differing levels of rainfall around the region. With Western plains covering almost two thirds of NSW, low rainfall and high temperatures means people need somewhere to store water – concrete water tanks, of course, provide the solution.

Brisbane – Why might you choose to install a concrete water tank if you live in Brisbane? Well, its climate means it suffers from floods and droughts periodically. This, of course, creates pressure on the area’s water supply, with Brisbane council running a successful campaign to encourage residents to install water tanks. It’s worth knowing that over 90,000 people have now got on board, and opted for a water tank.

Sydney – An effective solution for storing rainwater in Sydney, concrete water tanks are a great, environmentally-friendly, moving-saving opportunity for your home or business. Why? Sydney is facing a potential water crisis, with much of the municipal supply being determined by the Warragamba Dam. Water levels are now at their lowest ever, but water tanks can help you by ensuring you can store vital water for when you need it most.
